It will continue to function as a port of call, and a new terminal will probably be constructed in the future. Although Charlotte’s tourism economy may suffer from the decision, officials believe it is the right decision for the city’s future. They speculate that there will be future opportunities for a more developed cruise port capable of welcoming visitors to the city. In the meantime, cruise ships will continue to use the port as usual. Charleston is a major city, so cruise passengers have plenty of transportation options.

Unfortunately, it had invested heavily in developing the new Mobilecruise terminal and had accrued debts requiring $1.8 million repaymentsannually until 2030. Eventually Carnival signed a new contract, returning toMobile cruise port. This continued until 2011 when Carnival decided not tooperate their cruise ships (at that time the Elation) out of Mobile. Thereason for their relocation to other cruise ports was the higher fuel costsinvolved in sailing from this northern Gulf port and the inability to raiseticket prices from this location. Mobile cruise terminal is part of the port’s 4,000 acrecomplex which has 5 miles of waterfront and 41 berths. The port includes anupper and a lower harbor which is currently used by cruise ships.

Mobile AL was ranked USA's 4th largest coal export port for 2012, with the majority of the exports being shipped to Europe and South America. The Charleston Museum showcases and celebrates the city’s history and the American South as a whole. History buffs will enjoy learning about the city’s role in some of the nation’s most iconic wars and battles. Located just under 1.5 miles from the port, it’s an easy place to visit. Here, you’ll find Charleston City Market, the city’s most visited attraction. Established in the 1790s, the market and the surrounding streets make you feel like you have been transported back in time.

If it’s your first time sailing from Mobile, then you likely have a few questions about your cruise… how to get there, where to park, where to stay, and even more. So to help you get started, we’ve covered the basics of the port to give you a better idea of its location and layout. The links below should also help you answer some of the common questions about sailing from the port. The Port of Mobile covers an area of over 4,000 acres and is the only deep-water port in Alabama. It has two harbors and 41 berths handling mainly container ships, coal, aluminum, lumber, paper, iron, steel, grain, paper, heavy lift and oversize cargo. Allow at least 30 minutes for the journey by taxi, hotel shuttle service or rental car, and up to an hour when traffic is heavy.

Some hotels offer transportation services for their guests, while others can be accessed by arranging a pick-up or using local transportation options. The cruise port is situated on the western bank of the Mobile River, due east of the Mobile Civic Center and at the edge of downtown. While most cruisers drive in for their trip, the cruise port is about 15 miles (25 minutes) from the Mobile Regional Airport.

Despite its popularity, Charleston Cruise Port is a relatively small part of the main seaport, with only one cruise ship pier capable of handling full-sized cruise ships. Given its limited capabilities, it is only used as a homeport for a single cruise line – Carnival Cruise Line. That’s not the cheapest port parking around the country, but considering that many other ports charge $20 or more per day, it’s not bad. The cruise port is located at the edge of downtown and right on the river, so land is at a premium. The good news is that Mobile’s terminal parking is extremely convenient.

All oversized vehicles are also directed to an offsite parking lot (at Mobile Civic Center). Since 2018, Carnival offers 7-day roundtrip departures from Mobile AL to destinations no longer limited to Caribbean Mexico. The new itineraries are longer than the ship's usual 4- and 5-night roundtrips to Mexico. Mobile is USA's largest seaport for handling breakbulk forest products.

The colorful yet muted buildings are adorned with Roman-style columns and other early American architectural features. For shoppers, the market is packed with stalls selling locally-made goods and food items. Although there isn’t much to see within the immediate vicinity of the port, there are plenty of sightseeing opportunities and amenities within the city of Charleston itself.

It played an important role in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Spring temperatures usually sit between 60° and 80°F, but rainfall can be an issue. Even though Charleston gets plenty of springtime rain, showers are usually brief, so you can still enjoy exploring the city and everything it has to offer. Ridesharing services, particularly Uber and Lyft cars, are also becoming a popular and affordable alternative. Although there are limited shuttle services, the city has plenty of public buses operating in its downtown core, which can help you save a bit of money while you explore.

Charleston, SC

Charleston Cruise Port offers relatively basic terminal facilities, as there has not been any concerted effort to renovate and update the main terminal. With that said, you will still find clean and serviceable bathroom facilities to the right of the main entrance and within the main terminal building. As mentioned, Carnival Cruise Line is the only cruise line that uses Charleston as a homeport; however, others make temporary use of the port by featuring it as an occasional departure point and port of call. If you are driving to the city and its port, rather than flying into Charleston, there are plenty of simple ways to get there by bus or car. While global containerized cargo markets were routinely depressed by 15-20% over the past year, the Alabama Port Authority’s container operations maintained YOY performance, with 563,537 TEUs moved in 2023. If you have an oversized vehicle like an RV, the rate jumps to $36 per day.

If you want to revel in the city’s unique history, we recommend exploring the historic downtown core. At just over half a mile from the port, you can easily walk to the city center. The humidity can make it feel warmer, so pack light, breathable clothing to explore the city. Overnight parking costs $17 per day, but we recommend pre-booking your spot, as you can save money and guarantee you will have a parking space. The parking lot is patrolled overnight by port police, so it is a safe location to leave your vehicle. Not only will we cover practical details, like the port’s location and proximity to the airport, but we’ll also explain some of the most exciting things to do in the city and the surrounding area.

Mobile Alabama Cruise Port

It was the home port of Carnival’s Holidaycruise ship with itineraries mainly to Mexico showing 100% capacity. The Port of Mobile is on the estuary of the Mobile Riverwhere it flows into Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Although it is mainly acommercial port for cargo and container ships, the specially built Mobilecruise terminal is currently used for Caribbean cruises by Carnival CruiseLines. Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal is a 66,000 ft2 (6,130 m2) sized cruise ship facility with top-notch security, dedicated cruise parking area and covered lanes serving passenger pickup / drop off vehicles. The cruise ship terminal building is located in downtown Mobile City, in close proximity to hotels and restaurants. Despite the port’s popularity as a departure point, the South Carolina Ports Authority recently announced that cruise ships will no longer start their journeys from Charleston as of the end of 2024.

Despite a softening market, the Port continues to see steady volumes and remains one of the fastest-growing container terminals in the U.S. The channel deepening project will make Mobile the deepest container port in the Gulf and is expected to be online next year. Cruise parking in Mobile is easily accessible with several lots available near the port. Whether passengers prefer on-site parking or nearby garages, there are various options to ensure a smooth embarkation and peace of mind during their cruise. From Mobile Regional Airport to the cruise port or hotels, taxis, ride-sharing services, and private shuttles are readily available.

Cruise Parking at Mobile Cruise Terminal

Ships carrying over 3,500 passengers will also be prohibited from using the port. For those looking to spend more time in the city, three car rental services are located just a few blocks from the cruise terminal. For cruise passengers arriving by air, Charleston International Airport is located roughly 12 miles from Union Pier Terminal, making it easy for passengers to arrive on the same day as their cruise. Given the port’s location within the city, there aren’t many alternatives around.
